Can cannabis cure cancer?

There’s solid evidence supporting the idea that cannabis compounds can reduce growth of cancer cells.

The association of cannabis and cancer has been the talk of the town in the recent past. One of the most popular questions is: can cannabis alone cure cancer? The short answer is no. The long answer is more complex. Let’s delve deeper into it.

To start, we need to understand what cancer cells are and how they are different from our healthy cells. Cancer cells are rogue cells, they fail to obey the cellular regulation that keeps them under control. Cancer cells, due to certain changes in DNA, keep rapidly increasing in number without any checks and balances.

Cancer causes pain in many forms, which is a well-known fact. The lesser-known fact is that the painkillers prescribed to manage this pain can cause a lot of harm to the body. The side effects of these meds are quite deadly because they bind with the opioid receptors in the brain stem and lead to multiple other systems malfunctioning. People start to suffer from heart complications, breathing problems, and more.

With cannabis, there are no such side effects or risks of overdose. Studies have intact shown that cannabinoids can slow the progression of several types of cancer, including lung cancer, lymphoma, and breast cancer. In studies across some labs in Europe and the USA, cells of the cannabis plant were added to cultures of cancer cells and the observations were mind-boggling. The cancer cells stopped proliferating, and some of them actually started to die.

CBD or THC?

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are both naturally occurring compounds found in cannabis plants. THC and CBD are different fundamentally because of their different physiological effects. CBD is non-psychotropic and therefore will not give you a “high” whereas THC is psychotropic and is the only known cannabis-derived compound to make you “high”.

CBD is known to have a higher degree of cancer-curing effects as compared to THC, as THC is known to have certain psychotropic effects. CBD may also enhance uptake or increase the potency of certain drugs used to treat cancer. While THC works differently from CBD, the most basic mechanism of fighting cancer cells is the same for both. CBD has the advantage of not producing intoxicating effects, but studies have shown that both CBD and THC if taken together to provide even better results.
